Daynote mail and replies -- Week 8

* Link to: last modified at 23:35 GMT+1, on 28.02.1999

Any quoted mail from reader feedback ends up here. This tends to reflect something of the ongoing discussions between myself and readers (and other web-daynote maintainers), provide tips, ask for help, and just be plain fun.

The sidebar "Daynotes"-link, beside each weekday, links to the corresponding day in the daynote file. The reverse linkage is also provided on the daynotes.

himself Mail your comments to: bo@leuf.comemail me

Anyone who wishes correspondence to remain private should say so up front.

Quoted mail may be shortened and is usually based on my reply quotes. There may be some minor overlap between what's on the daynote page and what is given here in order to give correct context.

(BTW, week numbering is according to the Swedish calendar, which this year started January in week 53. "Current" weekday is of course based on GMT+1.)

Just thinking out loud <clicketyclick>... (apropos Bob Thompson's musings on having a fixed URL for "current page").

Should one decide to use page-a-day format, it might be worth while to do an indirection system, something like:

  1. Each page named according to date (YYYYMMDD.html comes to mind :), with links to preceding and succeeding day. These links never change.
  2. A "current day" referral page with no content except links to: (today), (yesterday), and whatever else seems relevant. The (today) and (yesterday) links are then updated forward each day to the current content pages. The (today) link could be echoed in a META-refresh tag, so that people who use a constant bookmark can let the page load in background and after say 5 seconds be autoforwarded to the current page.

Actually, one could use this for the page-a-week system too.

For an example of a working referral page, see this pageremote (I at one point moved the original into a subdirectory).

* This in from Opera support about gettting rid of the exit dialog...

Check your OPERA.INI file (usually in C:\WINDOWS) and add this line under:

[USER PREFS]

SHOW EXIT DIALOG=0

That's all you have to do.

[USER PREFS]

SHOW SPLASH SCREEN=0

Great! Works perfectly!

While registering my new (final?) domain (leuf.net), I had the following exchange with my leuf.com host webmaster Steve Crisp:

> I'm on the road checking in sporadically, and I wasn't sure that the message had gotten through.

Well. if you're in the area, stop in and I'll whip up some snow crab legs with drawn butter. :)

I wish... Want to see where I am?

A place called Arvika. Snowing this morning.

Steve replied:

Very north. Seems very cold. Of course, I start shivering when it gets below 65 or so. By the way, the next machine we bring on line will be named Sweden, and Arvika will have the honor of being the internal hard drive name. Not that anyone who lives there probably cares; they're all too busy trying to stay warm... :)

Very nice. What one doesn't do to find unique names, right?

Imagine that...

Steve and Valerie Crisp run Pageplopremote out of North Carlolina. I have found this to be a very personal and friendly webhost, ideal for the reliable and no-fuss hosting service I wanted to start with for my then new com domain. Recommended. Very high scores using the Tophosts testpage for evaluating connectivityremote.
